Program and model documentation

The following presentations give a quick overview of the DELPHIN 6 interface:

New functions

  • DELPHIN6_WhatsNew.pdf – New features and optimizations in the hygrothermal transport model DELPHIN 6. As an introduction and especially for those switching from DELPHIN 5, this presentation gives a brief overview of many of the program’s essential functions.
  • DELPHIN6.1_WhatsNew.pdf – Overview of the innovations in DELPHIN 6.1 . A short tour of the program and the new functions in the program interface and accompanying tools.
  • Video (approx. 40 minutes in German) with new features of DELPHIN 6.1.3 and 6.1.4 – https://youtu.be/_yFKEa2qrhA.

Validation

Validation refers to the process of model testing, in which the correct implementation of the formulated physics in the numerical model and solution method is checked. Validation also refers to the basic suitability of a software or the model contained therein to reproduce the data measured in the laboratory or field test. Among other things, it is checked whether the model contains the required complexity and extensive physics and whether it can be parameterized sufficiently.

Validation of the software implementation and the numerical calculation method

The implementation and numerical implementation of the simulation program was checked with the tests described below. In these tests, the physical equations and required parameters are specified in detail. Deviations from the reference values or permitted tolerance range are either due to errors in programming, unsuitable numerical algorithms or insufficiently selected solution parameters (time steps, etc.).

DELPHIN was successfully validated with all test cases described below:

  • HAMSTAD benchmarks 1 to 5
(transient heat, air and moisture transport)
    Details on HAMSTAD benchmarks
  • EN15026:2007
    (transient heat and moisture transport)
  • EN 15026:2019 (pre release)
    (transient heat and moisture transport)
  • EN10211:2007
    (Stationary thermal bridge problems)
Details of the Grid Sensitivity Study
  • absorbing and drying
(Transient heat and moisture transport, focus on capillary transport in the medium and low-humidity area)

Details on validation, i.e. model configuration, solver parameters, evaluation options etc. can be found in the following publication:

Luisa Sontag, Andreas Nicolai, Stefan Vogelsang,
Validation of the solver implementation of the hygrothermal simulation program DELPHIN ,
2013, Qucosa, urn:nbn:de:bsz:14-qucosa-128968

This document documents the conditions and requirements of all test cases, including the absorption and drying test developed at the Institute for Building Climate (TU Dresden) specifically for testing simulation calculations for interior insulation.

Validation of the transport model

The transport model as well as the integrated material and climate models and the parameters used were validated in various research projects (ie measurement data could be reproduced with the simulation).

Test houses

  • Talstrasse (Dresden)
  • Herrenschießhaus (Nuremberg)
  • Gemeinschaftshaus (Nürnberg-Langwasser)
  • Half-timbered house (Ebersbach)
  • Half-timbered house (Lower Saxony/Edemissen)
  • Bahnmeistergasse (Senftenberg)
  • Handwerk15 (Görlitz)

Details on these projects/research work and related diploma and doctoral theses can be found in the respective publications (see the Literature section). Furthermore, DELPHIN was and is used at many research institutions and continuously tested and adapted for a wide variety of applications.
